About the show

A new presenting partnership with NORPA and The Quad will see local creative and NORPA Associate Artist Kate McDowell perform her challenging one-woman show Wonderbabes in Lismore’s new outdoor precinct.  Staged in a large scale tent Wonderbabes is set in Byron Bay on New Year’s Eve and encapsulates the hedonistic energy of the Northern Rivers music festival culture. Kate McDowell’s writing and performance explores a brutal test of her social and sexual limits in a thrilling ride that’s a visceral clash of storytelling and poetic imagery, all set to a thumping, live, electronic score.

The partnership between The Quad and NORPA taps into NORPA’s strong track record of staging theatre in unique site-specific spaces (eg: Railway Wonderland, Dreamland, Home Project) while also adding to the animation of the cultural life of Lismore and supporting emerging local artists through NORPA’s Associate Artist program.

Aimed at 18 to 25-year-olds this is a show that every young person should experience.

The Quad precinct will feature site lighting, inflatable design elements and an outdoor bar and the precinct will be open for patrons to enjoy pre, post and during the show.

“The show is about a young woman who’s testing her limits. She’s angry and frustrated with her mother, the world, and pretty much everyone. She wants to cause trouble, get into danger, and feel something intense, to get to know herself better. It’s a two hour monologue, but it’s written as a hero’s journey, so it has that pace and structure that keeps you hanging in there.” — Kate McDowell
