Theatre for Schools 2017

About NORPA’s Theatre for Schools Program

Do you remember the first time you experienced the magic of a live theatre show? Ask any playwright, actor or theatre maker and it’s often their early exposure to the theatre that had a profound effect on them.

Each year NORPA puts together an exciting program of shows that inspire, educate and engage with young people of all ages. We connect with pre-schools, primary, high schools and home-schoolers across the region.

We offer student group prices (teachers complimentary), provide teacher resources specific to each show, and organise additional activities such as workshops, opportunities to meet the cast and educational visits to NORPA.

Bookings for our annual Theatre for Schools program commence in Term 3 of the previous year and this year we have distributed our program to all schools in the Northern Rivers.

Our 2017 Theatre for Schools program is outlined below and bookings are still available. Should you wish to be emailed a copy of the outline and booking form, please contact our Marketing Manager or our Box Office.

Victoria, 1881: the men and women of the ‘Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve’ take on the Board for the Protection of Aborigines in a fight for justice, dignity and self-determination. For the first time, we bring back to life Coranderrk’s voices – both black and white – through a theatrical re-enactment of their official testimonies before the 1881 Government Inquiry into Coranderrk.

Coranderrk: We Will Show the Country unites the power of oral history and the authority of the written-word to forge a personal connection with the voices of the past; allowing key figures such as William Barak and several of the men and women of Coranderrk to speak directly to a contemporary audience.

Not a story of “black versus white”, Coranderrk pays tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to the challenge despite all odds, appropriating the power of the written word and white political discourse to make their voice loud and clear; whilst also celebrating the spirit of friendship, and the power of genuine collaboration, between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

Music

Imagine standing on stage surrounded by the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s virtuoso musicians, watching bows and fingers fly, feeling the power of the bass line, or hearing the exquisite tones of Artistic Director Richard Tognetti’s Guarneri del Gesù violin up close. ACO Virtual, the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s ground-breaking virtual orchestra installation offers this, and more. It was created by filming thirteen members of the ACO against green-screens, capturing audio and video for each individual.

In the workshops the Northern Rivers Conservatorium provide a demonstration on the different roles of string instruments in a song (musical setting). With the help of a loop pedal participants will be shown how a bass groove is constructed and how a chordal texture such as strumming or riff will compliment this bass groove. Then on top of this the melodic role is introduced.

The workshop is an informative and entertaining way to learn how music is put together. Audience can participate if they have an instrument and are keen to come and have a “jam” on whatever string instrument they have.

School group price $10 per student
Teacher price 1 complimentary ticket per 10 students
