Flow 2023

A free outdoor community event celebrating kinship, culture and connection.

Created and performed by Mitch King with Blake Rhodes
Directed by Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal

In November 2023 audiences gathered under the stars for FLOW, a free outdoor community event celebrating kinship, culture and connection.

Told through dance, poetry, video projection and rap, Flow is a yarn about Yaegl country and its neighbouring nations. Inspired by the first native title claim on a body of water, it’s the tale of a man’s search to discover more about his story, and our region’s shared history.

Yaegl Bundjalung man Mitch King was joined on stage by sound artist Blake Rhodesdirected by Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal. Together they journey to find identity in music, urban culture and nature. Guided by the voices of elders, custodians and young people, they explore the living traditions held in local ancestral lands and discover the cultural significance of the waters that flow through our region.

FLOW was a free outdoor event held at Maclean Showground (16 – 17 Nov) and The Quad, Lismore (23 – 25 Nov). The evening featured pre-show guest performance by a local musician everyone was invited to dive deeper into the themes of the show with a free events program of workshops, talks and activities.

“FLOW was by far one of the most captivating performances I’ve seen in my lifetime… It was an overall experience of emotion in all its forms andI left yearning for more! An essential experience for all. Thank you!”

“As I sat and watched I could feel my smile widen and widen. Absolutely loved the whole show!” “ The performance and whole experience over the last 2 nights was world class. … This work is important on many levels as a foundational education and inspiration piece, for children and adults, and not just for Yaegl Country. Thank youNORPA for this mesmerising evening.”

“A profound, authentic and emotional storytelling experience.”

“Such an incredible event and the fact that it was free allowed access to a whole cohort of the community who would not normally be able to attend something like this. Thank you for providing something local. Well done to all involved, we have world class talent in our local community and thank you for showcasing it.”
